Street Fighter Movie

Client: Paramount
Art Director: Jude Buffum
Producer: Andrea Arango, Executive Director of Digital Marketing

These are four 16-bit pixel art illustrations that Jude created for Paramount Pictures as part of the marketing campaign for the Street Fighter movie, each depicting a classic fighting game showdown between characters from other beloved Paramount franchises, complete with era-authentic HUD, vintage pixel typography, and characters squared up in their starting stances.

Project Goals

With the Street Fighter movie premiering, Paramount wanted to extend the film's retro gaming aesthetic across their social channels by staging fighting game matchups between characters from other IP in their catalog. The brief called for four complete fighting game screens, each featuring a different franchise: G.I. Joe (Storm Shadow vs. Snake Eyes), SpongeBob SquarePants (Plankton vs. SpongeBob), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Leonardo vs. Raphael), and Transformers (Optimus Prime vs. Megatron).

Project Realization

The four illustrations were released on the official Street Fighter movie and Paramount Pictures social media accounts, as well as the accounts for each individual property, timed to coincide with the film's opening week. The concept gave Paramount a natural reason to post on some of the largest franchise accounts on social media in a way that felt like a genuine crossover celebration rather than a marketing grab.

Creative Process

A child of the 80s, Jude watched all of the cartoons that spawned these franchises, collected their action figures, and spent the remainder of his weekly allowance at the arcade, pumping quarters into the Street Fighter II machine. For these reasons, as well as his 20+ years creating pixel art for brands like Star Wars and Fortnite, Paramount gave him wide latitude to art direct the pieces based on his deep knowledge of both the IP and the conventions of 16-bit fighting games.
